HOME TOUR: our living room updated

Our living room is 10 feet wide by 20 feet long and has been kind of a decorating challenge for me.  This was my least favorite room in our home for a long time and last year we switched everything up.  I realized our living room has now been like this for almost a year and I still haven’t posted anything.  This is our living room updated!

We don’t have any lighting in the room beyond lamps (something to fix someday) and the way we previously had the living room set up made it awkward for talking to people.  I didn’t like how formal the room felt and how everything centered around the piano; the room felt very formal and heavy.  While yes, this is our formal living room, we aren’t super formal.  I’ve tried talking Devin into turning this room into our dining room and our current dining room into a piano room; no dice 😉 .

Beyond our piano though, we moved darker furniture out of the room, I made a gallery wall of things I’ve had sitting in a closet, and we bought a Kallax from Ikea to display knick knacks and books.

I’m happy to have this room settled and finished!  I’ve never been an Ikea person, but this white Kallax made such a huge improvement to helping this room be lighter while still functional for our book storage.  When we start repainting rooms in our house to get rid of all of the flat paint, I’m really curious if I’ll find a similar color or go for something a tad darker in gray so it pops a little more; we’ll see.  In the mean time, I’ll just enjoy this room!

I love the Kallax from ikea, as i’m sure you know 😉 it looks great!

  • I love the subtle floral design around the mirror too. It’s very pretty! I think I’d paint the frame a bright yellow (just me) but it’s beautiful as-is. I’m the same way with frames though, so don’t feel bad about it. I straighten them and somehow they are always slightly crooked again just a few days later. I’d blame the dogs but they are too small to be the culprits.

    • Okay, it is absolutely crazy how pictures settle so I am glad that I’m not the only one! I like the wood grain on the mirror, but I can totally see you doing a yellow and I think it is your power color! I love the color teal (light and dark), gold, and then wood stains! I’m so excited to see what your home looks like when you finish your home hunt 🙂

Such a happy room! And I love the art on the bookcase – simply lovely and all things perfect. I don’t think men fully grasp the importance of pianos (and that they have every right to their own room). My piano is still 3 hrs away in my parents house. Can’t talk my hubby into getting it moved here! (the fact that it’s going to cost several hundred dollars might have something to do with it. ha!)

    • Thank you!! Devin loves hearing the piano, but doesn’t play. We both really want to put our kids in lessons when we have kids though someday. Piano moving and tuning is seriously such a hassle… when we moved the piano to the other side of the room, we had to put all of this stuff under it to move it so it didn’t scratch our hardwoods. I hope you can get your piano soon and I’d love to see pictures of it! 🙂

What a wonderful room! It came together so nicely. I could spend hours in there reading with a hot cuppa tea!

    • I love reading in here too because it gets the perfect amount of sunshine- those chairs are some of the comfiest we have in our house too 🙂

So stunning! I love all of the details. The different prints, the bookshelf, and that mirror is just gorgeous!

    • Thanks so much! I really lucked out with the mirror at the thrift store. I’m loving all of the random things I’m finding here from other people haha 🙂

I really like the mirror and the chair. She did a great job re-upholstering it! I had a friend in high school whose grandfather owned a re-upholstery shop.

    • Holy cow, she did such a great job! Watching her do the upholstery, it was obvious it was such a labor of love. It took so much time and she had never done a project like that before!

  • What a fun room! I love what you did with your bookshelves!

    • Thank you so much!! I was nervous about having the books like that at first, but I love them now! We keep all of the kid’s books on the bottom so our friend’s kiddos can look at them too.

    • Light blue and teal are my favorite colors together! We lucked out that the trunk was from Devin’s childhood. I’d love to see pictures of your trunk!

  • I really love how unique, eclectic and vintage inspired your decor is. You’ve really found the perfect medium between showing your style through all sorts of different pieces and not having a cluttered room.

    • Okay, this is seriously the nicest compliment. I really like collecting different items, but I’m always freaked out by clutter too; there is a fine line to tip toe between the two. ♥
