June recap + July goals

June was a great month for spending time with family and for house keeping!  Devin has been able to work from home a lot and he might have even mentioned in passing that we could look for a dog in October after we get back home; in the 6.5 years we’ve been married, this is something I’ve never heard so now I’m doing a lot of researching and thinking.  I think having a dog during busy season would be so nice for the companionship and I think I would really enjoy going on walks with a dog, but I also know it is a ton of responsibility.

We’ll see what happens, but I do know that we decided to stick around home for July instead of going to Charleston or Savannah.  We have a lot of stuff to do around the house and I’m actually looking forward to getting them done.

HIGHS

  • Our sun room is looking like a real room again and I’m turning it into our office.  It is amazing what a room without clutter can do.  I’ve left it completely unattended since Christmas when I made some huge candles batches.  I had burned myself out so much from it that I didn’t want to be in there.  I’m happy to have this room back.  I also feel like I’m getting into a much better routine of keeping our main rooms clean and I’ve been folding a ton of laundry.  My instant pot has also been saving me a ton of cleaning time… I haven’t stove top cooked since we bought it!
  • I wasn’t sure whether to put this in “high” or “low”, but I consider self-discovery a very good thing so I decided to put it here.  I listened to a podcast here lately that talked about being in “seasons of yes” and “seasons of no.” I had never thought about it like this, but the past few months have been really simplified, very focused on myself and our home.  It has been good, but also really different for me.  I think the last few years I’ve been overextending myself and I’m finding my new equilibrium.
  • A few months ago, I found a very cute piece of furniture being dropped off at the thrift store (first photo below!).  I asked them if I could pay them for it and they just gave it to me for free!  I was planning on restaining it or painting it, but after we got it in our dining room I realized it is perfect as is.  I’ve heard of some products that can help restore some of the staining without having to do anything else + I’m looking into how to get some stains out of the marble top.
(Because contrary to how my feed has looked here lately, I spend most of my time in my house .) I was lucky enough to get this as someone was dropping it off at the thrift store. I asked them if I could pay for it and they told me just to take it. I thought about sanding it restaining it or painting it because there is a lot of chips in the wood, but you know what? I think it is going to fit in here just fine without it. Yay for just deep cleaning!
My grandma always had a cactus collection on her kitchen window when I was growing up. Today I received one of her cute cactus pots (with all of my favorite colors!!) and I'm so excited to put a plant in it when I get home. #homewithautumn
Some of my first memories are at the Little Red river in Arkansas being surrounded by my grandpa, all of his siblings and their wives, and my cousins. I spent my childhood in fishing boats listening to stories of how so and so lost their toe or what food my grandpa hunted for his baby siblings during the depression. I only have one great aunt left, who is now in her 90s, and I cherish this sweet time with her.
I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me // Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.

LOWS

  • I’ve been in kind of a funk here lately.  I’ve been frustrated with appointments to Doctors.
  • I went through my yearly phase of wanting to change my blog name.  I’ve had this one since 2012 and found one I liked.  However, after a lot of feedback that I received, I actually like this one better.  (It also helps that I realized how many Pinterest images I would have to change, no thank you).
  • I picked up hand, foot, and mouth disease (or whatever it is) up at church.  I’m lucky because I have an extremely mild case of it, but it is seriously the itchiest thing I have experienced since chicken pox.  I was not expecting to spend my summer session break from work quarantined in our house haha.

MY FAVORITES

  • I discovered the podcast Bold New Mom.  I am not a Mom, but I feel like it is just a great podcast on self-care and thinking about your life in general.  When I think I’ll like a podcast, I start at the beginning and move forward.  I’m loving it!
  • I loved this post by Mayim Bialik about getting naked shouldn’t be equal with empowerment.
  • According to this article here, millennials are the most likely to use a library.  I go to the library sometimes just to have a quiet place to work on stuff.  I love the library and let’s be honest, it is nice to see something remotely positive about our generation.
  • Loved this post about the heartbreak of social media here.  I’m not in a season where I am having struggles with comparison and people are nice, but I just want to be where I am more.
  • This book sounds so good and the article about it here definitely had me putting it on my “to read” list.

  • I love the idea of having “seasons of yes” and “seasons of no”. There really are times that one needs to be the bigger focus.

    • I need to find which podcast it was, but it was so helpful! I think a lot about that when I’m having flare ups or am not feeling well and it removes a lot of the guilt for me.

  • Congrats on your goals! You did great this month!

I’m sorry for your frustrating doctor’s appointments. I have an MRE this month to evaluate how the damaged section of my small intestine is responding to my medication, and I’m pretty nervous for the results.

    • Thank you ma’am! I hope your MRE goes well and that it is better than you were expecting. Crohn’s is so incredibly hard. I hope you’re able to get all of the rest that you need.

  • Ahh so much good stuff here! First of all, my husband has the same name and spells it that way too! And that thrift store drop-off score is so pretty…can’t believe you got it for free!!

    • So much fun!! So many people spell his name wrong, does that happen to your husband too? I am so dang excited about this free score. Now I’m figuring out stuff to get everything out of the marble (I’ll use the leftovers for our kitchen counters too!).

      • hahaha YESS everyone spells it “Devon”!

  • I had never thought of “yes and no” seasons, but I think that’s a neat way of looking at it. I’m more in a yes season and I’m really enjoying it 🙂 I’m sorry you’ve had HFM and have to deal with all those appts. Ugh. We’ll have to go on a walk once you’re feeling better so we can catch up! Oh, and I’m practically giddy about your goal to do a travel post. I know I get to hear about Europe straight from you, but I love seeing it in writing alongside photos! Haha ok ok I’ll stop begging for those posts now!!

    • Thanks for all of your encouragement on getting those travel posts out haha!! They always end up taking so much time to put together since our vacation was very on the fly :). A big yes to walking!

  • That piece of furniture you got is so cool! And free is the best price haha! And decluttering does make such a huge difference!

    • I can’t believe all of the stuff people give away for free. I love inheriting other people’s “junk” haha!!

  • That is very surprising about a library being the hang out place. I never visit the library, however at my University I’m sure I’ll be using it everyone once I live on campus this fall! 🙂

    • So exciting for you to live on campus!! I spent so much time in the library in my undergrad and grad degree and I absolutely loved being in there :). I always found a favorite place to study that made it worth it!

  • I use the library all the time! I prefer it to working in a coffee shop because I don’t have to buy anything to not feel guilty about using free wi-fi!

    • Saaaame here! I always feel obligated to buy stuff at a coffee shop and their hot cocoa isn’t usually my favorite.

I’m not a millennial, but I am a huge library supporter. I’m actually on the library board and am the assistant to our Libraries Foundation. I think everyone should use their library all the time. 🙂

Sorry about the lows you experienced in June. I hope July is going better for you.

    • It looks like I am almost finished up with my hand, foot, mouth stuff and I am so happy for that! That is definitely cause for celebration 🙂 . I’m always so shocked when people tell me that they don’t own a library card. Whaaaat?!!?
