April Recap + May Goals

We’ve been spending a lot of time out in our yard and we removed the blinds from some of our windows to let even more sunshine in (why did we wait so long?!).  Georgia does spring the way it should be done- so many flowers!  I’m just grateful I’m not allergic to all of this pollen.

HIGHS

  • I found an amazing piece of furniture being unloaded at the thrift store when I was unloading my donations.  I asked the people if I could pay them for it and they gave it to me for free.  Devin and I are still not sure how I was able to get it into my car by myself, but I did.  I’m going to be chalk painting it soon and putting it up on the blog!
  • My job has gotten a million times better.  This semester has been rough.
  • We are getting home projects around here completed.  Check out our new mailbox + the garden we put around it!
  • I shared how we buy international tickets for under $400 roundtrip.
  • I’ve been trying to really baby my hair since I realized how much hair loss I had this time last year.  My hairdresser told me that I have a ton of baby hairs coming in and my hair is thick enough again that I can do a lot of twists and braids in my hair like I normally did.

…and this perfume is awesome smelling for $12 + some thoughts.

I fell into @oldnavy 's trap and found myself sniffing their perfumes and lotions located next to their checkout line. Well, this perfume smelled so I good that I found myself going back today just to buy it. It smells that good .
"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." We'll have been in Georgia for five years this summer. At first, I never wanted to put down roots because then it meant committing. Georgia has become home as I've put my love into our house. When we first started feeling like we should buy a home, I was like . And yet, it has been the very thing that has brought me so much comfort and joy. Georgia, you're okay. ️

LOWS

My dang thyroid meds make me so nauseous.  I submitted my side effects to a health website and apparently 10% of women my age have this side effect on this medication… FABULOUS.  I’ve gained weight just because I end up sleeping a lot of the nausea off and I haven’t been very active.  I’ve realized the last few months that my lows have been health-related every month and that is kind of making everything sink in that having an autoimmune illness is definitely chronic.

MY FAVORITES

  • We absolutely love visiting ghost towns.  I found this road trip itinerary for them around the US.  I would love to visit the ones around the south!!.  (We’ve been to Bodie in California and several in Death Valley.)
  • This article about the stress/challenges of belongings with middle class was interesting.  In reference to the article, the appeal of a large master en-suite was something we talked about when house hunting.  However, the more we thought about it, the more we realized we simply didn’t need it.  Four years post buying a house, I’m glad we have small master bathroom because it means less cleaning.
  • Want to get paid to read books?  I found this resource and I’m definitely intrigued.
  • I loved this quote by Jen Hatmaker about setting up boundaries.  Even more poignant, I think her first comment underneath it is just as growing where she talks about being on the receiving end of boundaries.
  • I’m becoming even more obsessed with podcasts and now: teacher outfit instagram accounts.  Here are some of my favorite teacher instagram accounts: here, here, here, here, and here.

Now for goals 🙂 …

Reviewing goals from April

  • Spend 30 minutes doing something spiritual a day.
  • Spend 30 minutes doing something active a day.
  • Spend 30 minutes doing maintenance cleaning everyday.
When was the last time you cleaned the outside of your cabinets???  I’ve also been having fun steaming every service in our house; I’m finding this more satisfying than I thought I would.
  • Continue purging every room in our house to simplify more.
I still have a lot of junk in our house, but I am getting so much closer!
  • Read 3 books
I put my reviews here.  I am now starting out on audio books!
  • Sell my grad school textbooks that I know I will not use again.
Our mailbox project + a project I am doing this month actually took up a lot more time than I thought.  This is still on the list!

Goals for May

  • Spend 30 minutes doing something spiritual a day.
  • Spend 30 minutes doing something active a day.
  • Spend 30 minutes doing maintenance cleaning everyday.
  • Continue purging every room in our house to simplify more.
  • Finish our master bedroom up!
  • Mulch around our trees in our front yard
  • Spray for weeds and trim up our side yard
  • Listen to 3 audio books (I’m trying this out because I can do more while listening)
  • Sell my grad school textbooks that I know I will not use again.

What were some high and lows for you in March?  What is a goal you have for April?

  • A lot of my meds for my illness tend to make me nauseous as well, but Zofran has helped me a great deal with that! Also…GINGER! I drink ginger tea, take ginger root supplements, and eat ginger candies. I couldn’t recommend it enough 🙂 Hope you find something that works for you. I know how frustrating everything that comes with a chronic illness can be, and it seems like when you have one thing taken care of, another thing pops up eek!

    • Autoimmune junk/chronic illness stuff just stinks. I haven’t tried Zofran, but it sounds like I need to! I’m so surprised that I have been so nauseous on this since my dosage was upped. I’m definitely contacting my Doctor soon, but in the mean time, it sounds like I need to buy some ginger candies too! Thanks for your tips!

  • I just opened so many links of things you recommended! Can’t wait to check them all out! Also the thing about your medication making 10% of women nauseous – insane. Seriously this is why there needs to be more attention paid to women’s health. I recently picked up medication for back pain I get which is some heavy duty stuff and the pharmacist asked me if it was for period cramps. I had to stop and be like WAIT WHAT?! This is the best we can do? No one is trying to find a better solution to this? The same sentiment applies here.
Good luck feeling less nauseous :/

    • Wow, if someone’s period cramps are that bad… I can’t even imagine- that’s awful!! When you have autoimmune issues, they kind of make different cocktails of stuff and throw it at you to see if it works. Everyone’s body is so different that it is so hard to figure out the right things until they can see your labs + see if you’re asymptomatic. Sooo tricky!

I will be checking out your blog + I hope your back gets better too!!

  • Congrats on getting so much done this month! Since we just bought a house, we did tons of deep-cleaning that normally doesn’t get done very often. I scrubbed the interior of every cabinet, cupboard, and drawer in the house!

As a fellow person with an autoimmune disease, yes, it truly is chronic. I’ve been dealing with this for over 20 years, though, so I’ve had a lot more practice. I still struggle to accept prioritizing my health at the expense of other goals, but it’s a necessity.

    • Moving into a new house makes you clean and go through your junk like no other. We’ve been in our house four years so I’m trying to act like we’re going to move just to get rid of stuff and pare down again. I’m impressed with all of the cleaning you’ve been doing!! I hope you are loving your new home!! I would love any tips you have on managing autoimmune stuff. I always appreciate your comments because I know your stuff is a million times worth, but you totally get it.

  • I’m with you, I love ghost towns! We have a ton in the area and it’s always fun to go and explore the old buildings and take pictures. It’s so interesting the things that you sometimes find left behind.

    • My favorite one I went into had several newspaper layers for insulation. The first one was from 1912 and then just went decade by decade until the house was vacated!!

Thanks for sharing that article, I’m sending it to my hubby to read! I’ve been wanting to go through our STUFF and purge, maybe this’ll help encourage him to be a part of it! I had major lows in April. A high was finally getting my pups to the dog park! They were so happy. I’m hoping to get the neurological pain down this month so I can be up and accomplishing things again!

    • I’m so glad you liked that article too! We’re been getting rid of a lot of stuff here lately. I’ll never be a minimalist, I’m just tired of having lots of extra because it means more cleaning. I hope your neuro pain stays down and hopefully away- I know your puppies will love even more visits to the dog park because of it! 🙂

  • Until I bought my house, I’d never once cleaned the outside of my cabinets. Now, it’s so satisfying that I actually enjoy it!!! Who knew? haha

    • I had in a few apartments, but only because they were so nasty that I couldn’t help it haha. Owning your own house is the best!
