our home’s to-do list (we’re going to finish this eventually)

Since we have been in our home, our financial and time priorities have gone to grad school and traveling every summer.  I wouldn’t take these experiences back for anything, but now we want to invest more in our home.  More than ever, our home means a lot more to me because I spend most of my day here now.

We’ve been brainstorming ideas about our house for a while and I decided to separate our goals into needs and wants.  Obviously, we may not get to all of these by the end of the year, but I sure would love if we could get to all of the needs since they aren’t that bad financially.

NEEDS:

  1. Completely weed our garden
Our garden areas were immaculate for the first two years we were here, but we neglected our yard for the last two summers.  We planted a lot of pretty flowers and I don’t want to lose our investment there.  We’ve been trimming our bushes back, but we have a ways to go.
  2. Put a better border around our garden beds
I put this under need because we currently have a cheap plastic border and it was neither effective at keeping weeds out or helping us see where the lawn mower shouldn’t go.  I think a larger stone border would be both more aesthetically appealing as well as more effective.
  3. Get a new mailbox here
Our mailbox was hit by some bozo after we’ve moved into our home and it wasn’t pretty to begin with… it looks pretty bad.  Beyond that, we’ve come home sometimes and the mailbox door won’t shut and it rains a lot here.
  4. Buy a new bathroom vanity for the master bathroom
We didn’t even think to check, but all of our drawers in our master bathroom vanity were broken when we moved in.  Our closet is actually bigger than our master bathroom so this is a huge storage issue.  Confession: we’ve literally had a box of toiletries that we use sitting in our master bedroom the whole time we’ve lived here.
  5. Get our master bathroom tile professionally cleaned
There are some really old deep set stains in our otherwise great condition 1968 tile.
  6. Re-grout our master bathroom
We are getting our bathroom tile professionally cleaned soon, but we need to repair some grout as well.
  7. Find paint that matches the ceiling to cover leak stain
We have two spots in our home that we need to cover.  The upward spray from Kilz was wayyyy the wrong color.  Additionally, we don’t have any paint that matches down stairs even though they left a ton (I’m giving the previous owners a crusty look right now).

WANTS:

  1. Create a garden box around our mailbox here
This is just an aesthetic thing and I think it would be cute!
  2. Freshen up our master bedroom
I didn’t realize how dark our master bedroom was when I decorated and I picked pretty dark earthy colors.  I want to freshsen the room up without spending a lot of money.
  3. Plant fruit trees in our yard
We’ve been talking about apple trees 🙂 .
  4. Have 4 vegetable garden boxes in our yard
We currently have two.  I’d like to have two more so we can get more veggies.  It would be nice to have this area be fixed up a little bit more with maybe mulch in between the boxes so we don’t have to worry about mowing it too.
  5. Plant berries
  6. Repaint the interior of our home
Every room in our house was painted with flat paint and after we lived here for a few months, we had the unfortunate surprise of realizing the previous owners didn’t prime any of the walls.  This is unfortunate because oily spots on the walls started coming out of the paint and it is impossible to clean.  And yes, I can tell you exactly every spot in the house where the previous owner’s dog liked to hang out/ lean on the wall because of it.
  7. Update our home numbers on our front porch and mailbox here
I just think that this would be cute and cheap.
  8. Repaint our railing outside
It is starting to chip, wah wah wah.
  9. Make our front porch look snazzier
Someone dropped some paint that was a different color on our front porch before we bought it.  I’ve also let my plants become kind of weedy.  I’m looking forward to this update.
  10. Do built ins in the family room with cabinets by the TV
We tried Ikea shelves by our TV the last few months, but the longer we’ve had it, the more I’ve realized I don’t want all of our DVDs and random decoratives to show.  I’ve had two reasons for not liking it: 1) I’ve felt bad when our friends come over because we have all of these decor items low to the ground and they all have kiddos and 2) I actually hate decorating the shelves with random junk and having to see it all of the time.  (Can you tell I’m really into just getting rid of stuff here lately?)  I’d really like built-in like cabinets so it is easier to child proof + it can be more for practical storage than just aesthetics.

The humbling thing about home ownership is that you can always find more things to do and fix, but these are things that we have now been discussing since we moved into our home in 2013.  I always want to be slowly improving and fixing our house so that it doesn’t become overwhelming like this again.  I feel like a lot of people wait until they are selling their homes before they make updates, but then they don’t get to enjoy them in the mean time!

I’ll keep you posted on the updates!

What are some things you want to update in your house right now?

  • I love your yellow door! These look like great goals, and I’m sure you’ll have fun accomplishing them!

    • Thank you!! It was a really dark gray when we moved in, but we painted it because visually you couldn’t even see the door. I love coming home to that yellow door everyday 🙂 .

When you find ceiling paint that matches, let me know! We have that problem all over our house and when we tried to match it, it totally didn’t work!

    • Yeah, I think this is one of those “never going to happen” house owner problems haha. I’ve talked to a few people and they always say the same thing about matching paint as well.

  • I can’t wait to have a house of my own to do projects on!

    • We’re definitely in a lucky season. I was surprised that we were able to get one so early, but a lot of it had to do with it being so expensive to rent in Atlanta versus having a much cheaper mortgage.

  • When you talk about your outdoor wants/needs it makes me wish you lived on a farm so I could reap the benefits – hahaha like chickens or fruit trees. I’d do it myself but I hate bugs soooo could you guys get on that? 😉 😉
This is a great list though and is totally realistic and things you can definitely do bit by bit. Let us know if you ever need a hand!
