Happy 6th to us!

It is wild to me that 6 years ago we walked out of the Mesa, Arizona temple a new family.  We’ve learned so much about each other, about life, and we’ve done so much.  Just in the last year, it has been really miraculous how many places we’ve visited and how much we have accomplished.  This year has been my favorite year of marriage, hands down.

I decided to do this question survey this year so we could look back at the answers we have later.  I’ll have to come up with different questions next year 🙂 .

Happy 5th to us: what we learned in the 5 years that we've been married | via The Spirited Violet

What are some of the proudest moments you’ve had of each other while you’ve been married?

  • A: When you passed all of your CPA exams the first time around because I knew you would and when you made work boundaries because you knew that you should invest in us more.
  • D:  When you got your master’s degree this year because that was a goal you had worked towards for a long time.  Also, seeing how much relationships mean to you; it has been special to see how much you care about those you teach through ESL and with the young women at church.

Where is your favorite place we have traveled in the US?

  • A:  Definitely the Redwood forest.
  • D:  Yeah, that makes sense because you love trees.  I loved driving through Yosemite most, but you totally slept through it because the cliffs kept scaring you.
  • A:  Yeah, that was super scary.  No regrets here.

Where was your favorite place we’ve traveled to abroad?

  • A:  Sorry, it was actually in Mexico without you.  I felt so euphoric when I got to the top of the temple of the sun which is 20 stories high.  I wanted to cry when I realized how steep it was going down.  I have always wanted to see one of those ruins!!
  • D:  Walking above the city with you in Salzburg.

How would you say the other influenced you most during the time you’ve been married?

  • A:  You’re very good at coming up with systems and looking at the world pragmatically and without judgement.  I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered any of these, but I have noticed I feel more sensitive to the things people say about other people now and I am better at figuring out ways to prioritize how I will do things.
  • D:  You are very empathetic to people and try to understand everyone’s point of view.  It helps me try to understand other people’s point of view before moving forward.

What was your first thought when you saw me on our blind date?

  • A:  Why is his hip popped out so far?  Why is my roommate being so embarrassing?  He has a nice smile and twinkly eyes.
  • D:  I don’t like her cheetah print cardigan.  She’s cute.  What is this weird noise that her roommate is making?

What’s your favorite meal that you’ve ever made in marriage?

  • D:  Cheesy corn casserole!  (I need to put this on the blog, apparently.)
  • A:  Pork chops that you bought from Costco and pan fried.

What’s your favorite date we’ve been on?

  • D:  Europe.  That was one big date.
  • A:  You had been traveling a lot our first year after we moved out here and time together was very scarce.  We went around the little downtown in our city looking at historic homes and talked about the future.

When did you know you wanted to marry me?

  • D:  When we were on the ski lifts on one of our first dates and we just really got along, I thought that it would be okay if something happened in the future with us.
  • A:  I was working two jobs and going to school full-time during the summer.  You made photocopies for me early in the morning and helped me find books for my practicum lessons so you could spend time with me.  I knew I liked you before, but this really just meant a lot to me.

What was a big surprise about getting married?

  • D:  I had no idea how much girls shed.  Your hair is everywhere.
  • A:  You always wanted to talk exstensively about my job and day when I got home whereas I just really needed to hide and unpeople for a bit.
  • What a great idea to do for your anniversary! (I might just have to steal this come May when our 6th rolls around!) Oh, and the shedding hair comment totally made me laugh…my husband would say the exact same thing!

P.S. That wedding photo is beautiful, and it made me realize that it’s the first time I’ve seen any wedding pics of you guys (I think). So cute!

    • Totally go for it!! Devin is still aghast at the hair 😂, but having a survey like this was a lot easier than a sappy post that is similar every year. I loved our wedding photos too, thank you! ❤️

  • Happy anniversary! What amazing adventures you’ve had in six years. (Tell your husband that Salzburg is my favorite city in the world-I studied abroad there and it changed my life.)

    • Salzburg is absolutely beautiful!! What did you study there? Super jealous 🙂

      • I just did a semester abroad taking college courses through the University. I took Art History, German, Austrian Culture (a course just for the study abroad kids taught my a local, it was fantastic), and Literature. I dream of the day I get back to that city! It was storybook perfect every single day.
